Indonesian Traditional Music Instruments


Indonesia is an archipelago comprising approximately 17,500 islands, with nearly thousands of these islands having its own cultural and artistic history and character. This results in different forms of music, and hence music instruments.

In this stamp issue by Pos Indonesia, the following traditional music instruments are being featured :

100 Years of Medan Post Office


Medan Central Post Office celebrated its centenary in 2011. Built from 1909 to 1911 during Dutch colonial, this colonial building has served its function as the post office of Medan since the beginning. The structure of the building is domed shaped and is decorated with stained glass and chandelier.

No stamp is issued to commemorate this centenary event. Only the commemorative cover is issued by Medan Central Post Office. The stamp design for Sumatra Utara Province issued under the Provincial Emblems series in 2010 is affixed on the cover instead.

Traditional Textile of Indonesia


A series of stamps featuring traditional textile of Indonesia were issued by Pos Indonesia in 2011 in conjunction with the World Philatelic Exhibition "INDONESIA 2002", to be held in Jakarta in 2002.

These stamps were launched during Jogja Stamp and Numismatic Stamp Show 2011, an early campaign leading to INDONESIA 2002. Known as "JOGJA 2011", the exhibition was held from 30 Mar 2011 to 3 Apr 2011.

Shown above is the official commemorative cover of JOGJA 2011. Featured in the stamp is Batik Parang Garuda, a hand drawn batik in parang and garuda motifs. Parang, also known as the keris or sword pattern, are the most powerful of batik motifs, with their strong parallel diagonal lines. Meanwhile, garuda is the mystical creature in Hindu mythology.

Vesak Day


The Lord Buddha attained enlightenment at the age of 35 and passed away at the age of 80. It was then that the Buddhist Era (B.E.) begins. Year 2012 marks the occasion of 2,600 years of Buddha's enlightenment.

Thailand Post has issued a commemorative cover and stamp in conjunction with this occasion, as well as to pay homage to the Lord Buddha and to publicise the United Nations Day of Vesak.

The stamp design illustrates the Buddha image in meditation, with the Bodhi leaf at the background.

Unique Marine Life


The South China Sea contain fascinating and mysterious marine species that descended from ancient fish-like creatures of the Ordovician period some 480 million years ago.

Some of these species have evolved into weird and wonderful shapes as well as colours that they hardly look like fish. This joint issue between Pos Malaysia and Brunei Postal Services features the following unique and fascinating marine species :

Timor-Leste Independence


East Timor, or Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, became the first sovereign state of the 21st century on 20 May 2002.

The country's official language is Portuguese, while the official currency is USD. The country's constitution specifies a semi-presidential system of government, where the President is elected directly by the people.

This first stamps issue of Timor-Leste is to mark the birth of the world's newest democracy of the century.

50th Golden Anniversary of EPF


Golden eggs for the golden years. The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is a statutory organisation responsible for providing financial security in the form of savings for its members upon their retirement.

Mandatory contributions by both members and their employers are to be made on a monthly basis, based on specified rates on the monthly wages of the employees. The EPF ensures that the savings are secure and receive reasonable dividends.

EPF members can withdraw their savings for retirement at the age of 55. Prior to that, members are also allowed to withdraw part of their savings, for housing, healthcare and other approved purposes.

This stamp issue is to commemorate EPF Golden Jubilee in 2001.

100 Years of IMR


The Institute for Medical Research (IMR) of Malaysia celebrates its centenary in 2000.

Established in 1900, it was mainly engaged in the research of diseases such as beri-beri and malaria during its early years. It subsequently moved on to the study of filariasis, leprosy, typhus, dysentery and dengue.

The scope of research has now included both emerging and re-emerging infections, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, allergy and genetic disorders, as well as environmental and herbal medicine.

Tropical Birds


This is the first joint issue between Pos Malaysia and Singapore Post, featuring tropical birds. The following tropical birds are featured in this stamp issue :

Tropical birds are most active during dawn, the time when they forage for food. They feed on variety of items from worms and termites to berries, seeds and nectar.

Maritime Links - Australia and Canada


A special souvenir miniature sheet, featuring the Marco Polo, issued by both Australia Post and Canada Post, to celebrate the maritime links between Australia and Canada.

Built in 1851 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, the Marco Polo made a record 68-day voyage from Mersey, England to Melbourne. Sailing time was cut by half, and this accomplishment led to the prosperity of the Canadian shipbuilding industry during the 1850s and 1860s.

Maritime Links - Australia and Ireland


A joint issue by Australia Post and An Post to celebrate the maritime partnership between Australia and Ireland.

Featured in this joint issue, Polly Woodside was built in 1885 in Ireland for William J. Woodside, and was presented to the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) in 1968.

The Polly Woodside has traveled more than 800,000 nautical miles during its 37 years of sailing career, and traded mainly between Australia and New Zealand.

50th Anniversary Australian Citizenship 1999


The legal status of Australian citizen was created by the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948, and came into effect on 26 January 1949.

Through Australian citizenship, a person acquires responsibilities as well as privileges as a full participating member of the community.

This stamp issue is to celebrate 50th anniversary of Australian citizenship.
