100 Years of IMR

The Institute for Medical Research (IMR) of Malaysia celebrates its centenary in 2000.

Established in 1900, it was mainly engaged in the research of diseases such as beri-beri and malaria during its early years. It subsequently moved on to the study of filariasis, leprosy, typhus, dysentery and dengue.

The scope of research has now included both emerging and re-emerging infections, cancers, cardiovascular diseases, allergy and genetic disorders, as well as environmental and herbal medicine.
