East Timor, or Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, became the first sovereign state of the 21st century on 20 May 2002.
The country's official language is Portuguese, while the official currency is USD. The country's constitution specifies a semi-presidential system of government, where the President is elected directly by the people.
This first stamps issue of Timor-Leste is to mark the birth of the world's newest democracy of the century.
