Australia's 1999 Christmas stamps are designed by well-known Australian painter and tapestry designer, John Coburn.
Coburn's paintings favour large, stylised shapes, often painted in glowing colours. His work radiates an intense joy that has no counterpart in Australia painting.
The 40c stamp features Madonna and Child, while the AU$1.00 stamp features an abstract Tree of Life.
