Olympic Torch

The 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games heralded a number of firsts in Olympic history. Held from 22 Nov to 8 Dec 1956, it was the first to be held in the Southern Hemisphere, also the first time Australia had hosted this world's most celebrated sporting event.

One of the most glorious sights of the Games was the lighting of the Olympic Flame on 22 Nov 1956. The Olympic Games symbolises the light of spirit, life and knowledge. Australia Post issued a set of 4 stamps then to commemorate the XVI Olympiad - one of the stamps depicting an Olympic Torch.

The Olympic Torch stamp has been reproduced, in contemporary 'stamp on stamp' design, as part of Australia 99 Olympics Day celebrations on 22 Mar 1999.

Early Navigators of Australia

Tasman, Cook and Flinders
Dampier, King and Bass
The exploration and mapping of coastal Australia was the work of many great navigators over two centuries. Six of these great navigators who helped put Australia's coastline on the map are being featured in above two special miniature sheets issued by Australia Post.

The stamps shown on these miniature sheets were first released in 1963-64 as the Early Navigators in Australian Waters stamp issue, and were re-issued in 1966 with new denominations for the introduction of decimal currency.

Abel Tasman (c. 1603-59) - Tasman discovered and named Van Diemen's Land, and also charted the northern coast of Australia from Cape York Peninsula to Port Hedland.

Captain James Cook (1728-1779) - James Cook sighted Point Hicks, who also sailed north and made numerous landings before claiming British possession of the eastern coast.

Captain Matthew Flinders (1774-1814) - Flinders circumnavigated the continent from 1801 to 1803, and charted large sections of the coast. He published a General Chart of Terra Australis in 1814.

William Dampier (1651-1715) - In 1688 Dampier led the first British party known to have landed successfully on the Australian coast.

Philip Parker King (1791-1856) - King charted the coast previously unexplored by the late Matthew Flinders. King published in 1824-25 a set of 8 charts, when combined with Flinders' chart, showed almost the entire Australian coastline.

George Bass (1771 - c. 1803) - Bass explored the southern coast of New South Wales. He and Flinders proved that a strait, later named after Bass, separates Van Diemen's Land from the mainland.

Sailing Ships of Australia

Australia Post issued four Sailing Ships of Australia stamps in 1999 to celebrate Australia's maritime history. All sailing ships featured in this issue have played a significant role in Australia's maritime history.

45c stamp - Polly Woodside, built in 1885, is one of only two of her type still afloat in Australia. It was primarily involved in coastal and intercolonial trade between Australia and New Zealand. Covered more than 800,000 nautical miles in her trading career, the Polly Woodside now has a pride of place at the Melbourne Maritime Museum.

85c stamp - Alma Doepel, built in 1903, is the last of its kind in Australia. It was a commercial ship trading mainly along Australia's eastern coast. Restored in 1980s, she now sails in Port Philip Bay.

AU$1.00 stamp - The Enterprize, a replica of the topsail schooner, was purchased by John Pascoe Fawkner in 1835 and was sent across Bass Strait where her mooring in the lower reaches of the Yarra on 30 Aug 1835 established the birth of Melbourne.

AU$1.05 stamp - Lady Nelson was the first to sail from the west through Bass Strait, initiating the shorter route from England to Sydney. It was also instrumental in establishing the first European occupations in Tasmania. The replica of Lady Nelson, built in the late 1980s, now sails regularly around Tasmanian waters.

Dragonflies & Damselflies - Series III

Dragonflies and damselflies belong to the order Odonata. There are about 5,000 species of these creatures worldwide.

Studies of the fossilised dragonflies show that these creatures have not changed much form since the time it existed over 300 million years ago. Pre-historic dragonflies grow up to 30cm in length, with a wingspan of up to 75cm. Today's dragonflies with 18cm wingspan is a rarity.

These creatures have the ability to fly in reverse, an exclusive feature not seen on other insects. They are also able to hover in a fixed position in mid-air.

Trees of Malaysia

The Malaysian tropical rainforest is one of the most complex and rich ecosystem in the world. Being our natural heritage, the rainforest is home to about 14,500 species of flowering plants and trees. Some of the fruiting species or leaves are used for food or extraction of chemical compounds for treating diseases. Trees which have beautiful flowers or shape have been introduced as ornamental plants.

The following five trees are being featured in this stamp issue by Pos Malaysia :

The Kapur tree, also known as Camphor Tree, was one of the main sources of camphor. It attracted early Arab traders to Borneo, and was worth more than gold at that time. It was used for incense and perfumes production.

The Pulai tree and the Burgor tree are widely planted in gardens and along the highway.

The Tembusu Padang tree has yellowish flowers with a distinct fragrance. The fruits of the tree are bitter tasting red berries, which are eaten by birds and fruit bats.

The Perah tree, with fresh fruits which are poisonous but can be consumed after cooking.

Freshwater Fishes of Malaysia

Freshwater fishes can be found in rivers, ponds and paddy fields across the landscape of Malaysia - from fast flowing, clear highland streams to the murky waters of lowland swamps.

Despite being scattered in wetlands and waterways throughout Malaysia, freshwater fishes require specific habitats, which restricts their habitats. They feed on terrestrial leaves, flowers, fruits and insects. Oddly, they do not depend on aquatic plants.

50th World Children's Day Celebration

The 2003 Children's Day Celebration brought great significance, as it was the Golden Jubilee celebration of this world event in honouring and cherishing the children of the world.

The first World Children's Day was celebrated in 1953 by the International Union for Child Welfare. In the following year, the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) officially recognised and celebrated the World Children's Day. The World Children's Day was officially sanctioned by the United Nations 5 year later in 1959.

Malaysia celebrated its first World Children's Day on 8 Oct 1959, held at the National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

The World Children's Day celebration in 2003 served as the platform to extend our hands, and ensuring that the younger generations receive the nurturing and love that is due to them.

The Tame & The Wild

Tame animals, also known as household pets, are actually descendants of their wild ancestors. Having adapted to an existence among humans for centuries, these animals have lost their wild instincts. Although closely resemble their wild cousins, these tame animals have become affectionate pets, and their existence depends upon human, who takes care of their needs.

Wild animals, on the other hand, are highly dependent on the ecosystem, whereby their very existence is threatened by changes in their habitats, such as habitat destruction. They are less adaptable than their tame cousins.

The 4 animals featured in the 2002 Malaysia Stamp Week issue are, from left to right :

1.  Leopard Cat (the wild)
2.  Domestic Cat (the tame)
3.  Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo (the tame)
4.  Buffy Fish-Owl (the wild)

Slightly larger than domestic cat, the Leopard Cat inhabits forests and mature plantations of Malaysia, and it is an efficient killer. Very aggressive, it is extremely difficult to tame. Its cousin, the Domestic Cat, has for centuries been a popular household pet. The domestic cat has not totally lost its wild instincts, as it is still an efficient killer, who uses its keen eyesight to hunt for rats and small birds.

The Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo, originates from Australia and New Guinea, is a popular cage bird due to its wholly white plumage and its erect light yellow crest. It can be taught to perform a variety of acts. The Buffy Fish-Owl inhabits forested waterways and swampy localities throughout much of lowland Malaysia. Its yellowish underparts with fine dark streaks make it a beautiful bird.
