50th Anniversary Snowy Mountains Scheme 1999

Year 1999 marks the 50th anniversary of the Snowy Mountains Scheme, one of the greatest engineering projects undertaken in Australian history.

When the Snowy Mountains Hydro-electric Authority was established in 1949, there was a serious national shortage of skilled personnel, equipment and construction materials – largely a legacy of World War II. An intensive recruitment campaign was waged. The Scheme absorbed many of the migrants who were arriving in Australia in response to the Commonwealth Government’s Immigration Scheme in the post-war years.

Snowy Mountains Scheme is regarded to be the most complex, multi-purpose, multi-reservoir hydro scheme in the world. It diverts water through huge trans-mountain tunnels (via power stations for the generation of electricity) before releasing it into the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers for irrigation or river management purposes.

Penang Free School Bicentenary

Penang Free School is the oldest English-medium school in Malaysia and Southeast Asia. Founded in 1816, it was also the first school to be established in Malaya.

Between 1805 and 1816, education was available only for the Caucasian children and children of Government Officials.

On 6 Feb 1816, a committee headed by Reverend Robert Sparke Hutchings, then the Colonial Chaplain of the Prince of Wales Island, submitted a proposal for the establishment of a school to the Governor of Penang.

This resulted in the establishment of the Penang Free School on 21 Oct 1816, which is open to all children regardless of race or religion. The original aim was to provide a school for the orphans and poor children. Since they would be completely taken care of, Reverend Hutchings suggested that Penang Free School should be a boarding school that also accommodates day-school children. The day-school children were to be taught in their own language by "nation teachers", and English would be taught to them only if they were to desire it.

To celebrate Penang Free School 200 years anniversary, Pos Malaysia issued a set of stamps to commemorate this important milestone of the school.

Battle Sites

Patriotism runs deep in the annals of Malaysian history, as recorded in the various brave stand against foreign invaders and internal strife.

This stamp issue by Pos Malaysia highlights the following few incidences where warriors and leaders past have fought valiantly in the defence of our beloved land in battles from the 18th to the 20th century.

Malawati Fort - One of the many fortresses built during the reign of Sultan Salehuddin, the first Sultan of Selangor, the fort fell to the Dutch in 1874 when the Dutch declared war on the sultanate during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim, the second Sultan of Selangor. The Dutch renamed the fort as Altingsburg. Sultan Ibrahim staged an offensive to retake the fort and managed to win it back a year later. The fort remained under the rule of the Sultan of Selangor ever since.

Mat Salleh Fort - Mat Salleh, a chieftain of Suluk and Bajau descent, led serious rebellion against the British North Borneo Company administration from 1894 to 1900. His dissatisfaction with the British arose as his traditional power base at Sugut River was diminished due to establishment of the Elopura Settlement, and particularly the imposition of taxes which lay with the new administration. A massive onslaught on his fort in Tambunan resulted in his death in 1900.

Bukit Kepong Encounter - Possessing 10 times the strength of the police force in Bukit Kepong Police Station, coupled with the isolated location, the communists were confident that they could easily take over the police station. Determined to never surrender, the police force defended their station against the invaders. Wives of fallen policemen also took up arms and fought alongside the police personnel. Frustrated by the strong resistance, the communists retreated after setting fire to the police station, which killed a few family members and more policemen.

Libau Rentap Fort - Libau Rentap, a legendary Iban warrior, fought against the occupation of the White Rajah in Sarawak. The warriors fought using traditional weapons consisting of spears, knives and blowpipes, and a famous canon known as the Bujang Timpang Berang. Rentap died in 1870 of natural causes, a freeman till the end.

River Transportation in Sarawak

Sarawak has a total of 55 navigable rivers with a combined length of 3,300 km. Of all these rivers, Rejang is the most important, also the longest in Malaysia.

Many forms of river transport have been used throughout the ages in Sarawak to serve people and their goods - longboats, war boats, paddling boats, rafts, sampans, tugboats, ferries and cargo boats.

Although roads have been paved everywhere, river transport will still remain an important means of transportation of passengers and goods in Sarawak.

The longboat, as featured in the 70 sen stamp, is a relatively new invention, taking over from the human-powered paddling boats. While the shapes of the boats are similarly low-lying and narrow, the hulls are built differently, depending on the kinds of waterway the boat travels on.

The express boat, as featured in the 80 sen stamp, was first used between Sarikei and Sibu. Interestingly, due to express boats, Sibu became the undisputed queen of shipyards in Sarawak and now builds for the global market.

The iconic perahu tambang, as featured in the 90 sen stamp, ferries passengers across the river from Kuching to the Malay kampongs nearby. These boats are still used by those who prefer to take this shortcut as it is only a 5 minutes trip instead of the half an hour road trip.

Medicinal Plants - Series III

Malaysia's tropical green rainforests are nature's heritage that hold an endless bounty of potent natural remedies.

Holistic treatment using herbal medicines is deeply embedded in the sociocultural heritage of Malaysia and is common across Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures, as well as the various indigenuous and Orang Asli tribe.

In continuation to previous issue on medicinal plants, Pos Malaysia issued the third series of stamps on medicinal plants in 2015, highlighting the following :

Misai Kucing (Cat's Whiskers) - This plant has traditionally been used for bladder and kidney problems especially for urinary stone, and is often taken as infusion for these conditions. Scientific analysis has also noted this plant's considerable antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Roselle - A hibiscus species, this plant is known for its fleshy calyxes used to produce healthy drinks. Roselle drink is said to possess anti-hypertensive, diuretic and mild laxative properties, as well as contains abundance of natural antioxidants.

Hempedu Bumi - Literally means "bile of the earth" due to its exceptionally bitter taste, this plant is said to have analgesic, laxative and digestive properties. It is traditionally used to treat diabetes, fever, worm infections, chronic bronchitis, colic, dysentery as well as skin conditions such as burns, wounds and ulcer.

Medicinal Plants - Series II

Malaysia is endowed with about 2,000 plants of medicinal value. Efforts have been made to study in depth and document the use of such herbs. Amongst herbs given emphasis are Tongkat Ali, Kacip Fatimah, Kerdas and Buah Keras (Candlenut).

Tongkat Ali is popular for its aphrodisiac property and as tonic for afterbirth and general health. It is also effective for hypertension, pains in the bone, jaundice, dropsy, fever, diarrhea, indigestion, lumbago and dysentery.

Kacip Fatimah is one of the most popular and potent ingredient in traditional herbal jamu for afterbirth care. A decoction of the plant is used to expedite labour and as a protective medicine for afterbirth. It is also used to treat gonorrhea, dysmenorrhea, rheumatism, dysentery and flatulence.

Kerdas is found in Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra, mostly wild in the forest. The shoot and seeds of the plant are known for their diuretic and purgative effects. The young shoot can be eaten raw while the seeds are eaten raw as ulam, normally with rice and sambal.

Buah Keras or Candlenut is native to Malaysia but is now distributed throughout the tropics. The fruits are dried and used in cooking as seasoning. The pulped kernel is used to cure headache, fever, ulcer and swollen joints. The bark is used for dysentery, the juice is mixed with coconut milk to cure sprue while the leaves are used for headache and gonorrhea.
